Have you checked the oil pump bolts? The M60 has issue with these going loose and falling into the pan. Search this forum for many articles on this and how to repair it.
As to oil/viscosity, I use Mobil 1 0-W40.
My beautiful e34 540/6 has developed a prominent ticking noise at idle. It decreases after the car runs for a bit and it is practically not there after an oil change. However, after a 300 mile drive yesterday (quick road trip) the ticking was very bad. It seems to be concentrated on the right side of the block and is more noticeable after a long run on the highway. I know it is related to the condition of the oil, but I just changed it two months ago and have only driven 2500 miles. What can I do to reduce this problem? Is there any additives or something. I know my car is leaking and burning a bit of oil so I keep a close eye on the level. WHAT VISCOSITY AND BRAND OF OIL DO OTHER 540 OWNERS RECOMEND??? THANKS IN ADVANCE.

The only oil I have tried and succeed in calming valve noise is Lubro Moly M0S2 Anti friction. They also go by the name Liqui Moly. I used it on my M50 525. Try it. you may need to mail order them because local auto parts store will not have them. it is not easy to find.. If you think it is oil related try that.. Also you may want to check on the oil pump bolt.. There is history of oil pump bolt backing out.

i had massive slack in my chain.... and a missing bolt, and that was making my engine rattle.
and yes, lubromoly moly treatment is the ****!
they sell just the moly part that you can add to any oil as an extreme friction reducer.
for the M60, run 0W40 full synthetic with one bottle of Valvoline Synpower oil treatment and one bottle of LM-MoS2
if you live in death valley or somewhere that when you cold start the engine temp meter is always above blue, then go to 50wt
