rusty huh?
the numbers are directly behind the starter as you look straight up.
dino oil...20w50?
I got the replacement gasket from my local bmw dealer this afternoon. I'm going to be dropping the pan to see the condition of the oil pump bolts, since they notoriously come loose.
I've got the e34 up on ramps right now, it looks like a straight forward job, I'll keep you guys posted if I come up on anything major.
I won't be switching to synthetic this oil change.
***I don't have an owner's manual, what grade dino oil do you guys recomend for my M60, with 150,000 miles, that won't see very cold weather during the 3,000 miles the oil will be in service??***
Also, I'm trying to find the numbers on the block that indicate nikasil or alusil, but can't seem to find them......I'll try again.
Here is my oil pan, in it's current state:

10w30 or 10w40 the hydraulic lifters will sometimes get pissed at thicker oil, i like 20w50 in solid lift motors like m20s and m30s
all america wants is cold beer warm cat and a place to take a poop with a door on it
Help Guys......
Went to bmw dealer just before closing because I forgot to buy an oil filter, I get it, the number on the box is 11427510717, yet, when I get home, have drained oil, have removed oil filter, I take out this new one, and on the filter it says 11427510716 The filter also looks and fits into the filter housing cap completely differently, as far as I can tell, it's the wrong part. There is nowhere else for me to get a filter unless I wait until tomorrow morning.
My question is, do I still drop the pan & look at the oil pump, or do I put oil & the old filter in it, so the oil pump, lifters, whatever, don't run dry. From what I understand it's bad to leave an engine sit with no oil at all.
HELP
I think no matter if I put new oil + old filter in, or let it sit overnight, I am going to continue and drop the pan tonight. Should I put any RTV on the new metal/rubber gasket I bought from the dealer, or does that go on all by it's lonesome?
I would just continue your task, leaving the motor without oil for one night isn't going to be that bad, just get a friend or neigbor to run you to the dealer tomorrow. I'm thinking just the gasket and clean surfaces should suffice on the new gasket. Seek another opinion on that though, I'm no pro.
i installed the new gasket dry...no gook. its very possible you have the old style insert in your canister. you need the old filter dildo upgrade to fit the new filter.
you wont harm anything by not adding oil overnight.
go for dropping the pan, Ill try to pay attention off and on here.

OK, Oil pan is completely dropped & both surfaces are almost completely clean ready to be re-installed.
All bolts/nuts on the oil pump seem secure, going to go back to that thread to double check what I'm looking at.
I have the NIKASIL block! SOB
Also, My pan must have been dropped before, because it had the same style (new) gasket installed as this one I just bought (metal with the small rubber inside). The gasket was installed with much RTV on both sides of the metal. I'm thinking I do the same, since, it was sealed on there really well.
Regal, could you explain more about the filter styles? I'm pretty confused to what you mean. Because, the filter that was inside the box had a different part number than what the part number on the outside of the box was, the part number on the outside of the box is what I thought was the correct one: 11427510717
Thanks
i didnt use sealer and I dont leak
the newer filter requires a dildo type insert that accepts the new filters larger diameter. the design of this filter was to eliminate extra crap into our landfills believe it or not.
