impact sensor as shown here... the metal roller on impact rolls forward and makes or breaks the contact shown here which triggers the airbag .. short version anyway.

coming out of each end is strictly the connector for it.

If you run into something or something runs into you...and as Bill R described...there is enough force to cause the roller to move forward and make contact...or if it breaks...it will deploy the airbag. That's why there is one on each side of the engine bay.![]()
