purge valve

hey everyone, i am just getting into working on cars. helping my techy friends with thiers has given me a little info, but am still very new.

today while i was driving around my '90 535i and it bogged down in fourh gear, and the CEL came on.

it happened a few more times and i stopped at my friends house and we checked the codes. i got the 1263 looked up and turened out to be the 'purge valve'

i was just wondering what a purge valve was and how to go about fixing it.
