    Default SEM Trim Black

I always paint, so if you want to paint, here is what to do:

I removed the top piece from the car, but the bottoms I left alone b/c they tend to bend if you try to remove them. If you remove the top piece, you will break the clips behind the trim. I would obtain ~24 (12 per side). There are also two grommets holding it on at the c-pillar. Be sure to pull the trim straight away from the car or you might break off the pins behind the trim. The parts you need to replace are in the ETK, so they are not a mystery.

Tape off the pieces on the car with blue 3M painters tape. Tape off above and below the trims. Take medium and fine scotchbrite pads and rough up the trims. Take a paper towl and some simple green or similar degreaser and wipe everything down. Anything that is going to be painted should be scuffed up and wiped down so that the paint etches best. Now use newspaper to cover a strip above and below the trims as the single strip of tape you used to prep for scuffing will not be adequate to block overspray.

SEM makes a trim black etching primer as well as trim black paint. These can be found at a local auto body supply store. With the car/trim pieces in the sun, apply two thin coats of self etching primer. The first coat will look like it's not sticking, but it is. Let the first coat dry to a tacky feel. Apply the second coat. After the second coat of primer, I use three coats of the trim black paint. Spray the coats very thinly to avoid runs. The stuff levels very well. The longer it sits in the sun, the better it cures.

I did not spend as much time this weekend on the 535iT as I had in the past but the results were decent. I still need to pull the door panels and paint those pieces.....for another weekend.

Wurth makes satin black trim paint for that exact purpose, although my grill is brand new and shiny chrome and it looks good!

try contacting a signwriter as they use the same type of tape but sell it in wider rolls, so its easier to do the rear curve, and cheap with good result
