Default checking trans fluid level in 530iT

Hey all, recently started getting "trans program" and changed the fluid/filter, but I am unsure of the procedure for checking the fluid level...is the car soposed to be running or not? I feel kinda stoopid for asking, but Bently and Alldata sem to omit the fact that this car has a transmission at all. It has 72K on it at this point in thime, and the fluid was pretty burned. ANy other ideas?
    Thanks.

get the thing level up in the air very safely, make sure the car isnt gonna fall off if you have stands....

get the correct hex to remove the filler from underneath... trans should be warm to the touch as you hold your hand on the trans pan, if its comfy its not hot enough, if its hardly bearable its the right temperature to unbolt the filler to check.

Make sure you have the car idling, run with the brake on through all the gears and then put it back in park. Then go under and check/fill...it's a chore but with no leaks its good till the next 30k filter change.

the only time i got the trans program message was when my battery was borked. the transmission ecu wants a good voltage line, and a faulty voltage regulator or bad battery could give that message.

if you havent changed your trans fluid in like, ever, then change it. i used a 50/50 mix of redline D4 and B&M trickshift and it runs like butter! i changed it about 15K miles early but the difference in feel afterwards was well worth it.
