WTH is this thing?

I have just gotten my first BMW - a '91 525iA (unfortunately manual BMW's are hard to come by in NZ me thinks). Anyhow, have a little key and finally found what it goes to. It's a little black box with the code 89 11 9 401 509. Does anyone know what it is? Can't find what the heck it is. Could be important seeing as it takes a key.

on my etk it came up as something to do with the alarm system but on the online etk it didn come up at all.Whu do you say 133k ouch?

Well it is more of a question. Don't have a clue about this car so I don't know how far it'l take me. Of course I have nothing but praise for the engine. Thanks for the help with the little box thing. Wish it a text on it and not just numbers.

FOUND IT WOOHOO! It is the old alarm that was factory installed. Will now try and find a schematic to determine if anything is missing from the alarm system so I can re-install it and perhaps save on insurance! GO THE NET! And GO YOU GUYS, YOU ROCK! Thanks!!!
