    i have huge play too

    i've tried tightening the nut above the steering gearbox but have to try it again
    first few times it was too tight and the wheel wouldn't
    return to center =\

    Hmmm, maybe I'd better rephrase my question:

    How much play should there be at the steering wheel with the engine off and all four wheels on the ground?

    Yes you gotta watch what you say around here or just get used to the humour. There'll be a little bit of play. Get onto www.bmwe34.net and see the info about adjusting the steering. It's all there except the part about the nut behind the wheel...
