Default Lots of engine oil in the canister??

After draining the oil for an oil change I opened the oil canister to remove the filter on my '91 535i. A lot of oil splashed out and the canister was still about have full of oil when I took out the filter.

Is this normal or should that oil drain out into the pan?? Did I forget to do something? I ended up sucking the oil out with a large syringe and finished the job, but I'm a little worried because I've seen some posts here about oil canisters going bad somehow.

The car does run great though and just passed the new CA emissions standards with flying colors.

    Talking about M30 Canisters.
The kit will be finished in two days and I will post pictures at the end of the week after engraving.

Complete kit with hoses and fittings (oil filter is the only thing not included) will be 150US.
The plate alone without the filter mount or hose is 100US.

Pictures to come soon, it is a sexy part... will look very sharp on our cars.

What size fittings are used? would it be possible to add a T fitting to the mix so I could source oil pressure (for a turbo, for instance)?

1/2" NPT fitting, I won't install the fittings so you can add a T if you want.

Then you can add a sensor for the oil pressure or oil temperature also.

Sounds awesome, can't wait for you to post pics of it. Would those be barbed fittings?
