on second thoughts it would appear that i have lost an gasket ring somewhere, i am correct in assuming that the exhaust gasket ring seats in the groove on those flanges?
Hello everyone,
just a quick question, i had one of the bolts fall out of the flange connecting the front and tail pipes i put some new bolts on the left most flange, I didn't want to do them up too tight (exhaust heat and expansion etc.) I was wondering whether these flanges are meant to be flush up against each other or is their meant to be some clearance. after doing up the bolts i took it for a spin but it still seems to be leaking a bit and i am wondering whether i didn't do the flange up tight enough or the gasket ring needs replacement.
exhaust diagram
i am talking about the flanges that are no. 5 in this diagram

Germans: Why can't they make everything?

Yes, you need gaskets and they usually only work one or two times around as they'll compress to fit the junction. Otherwise, there'll probably be an exhaust leak.
