I realise that, but this one hadn't been exposed to salted roads and the mechanics that inspected it thought the corrosion was more likely from the shipping.
Obviously it might have been a bit of both.

true but jap cars that get shipped over are usually in pretty good shape i guess from UK is a longer voyage but from south africa is probably a similar distance.

Shipping methods come significantly into play here. Japan probably ships their cars to the US wrapped in plastic bags. A private party shipping a single car may have obtained a discount rate on a cargo ship on an open deck.

    Default Shipping of New cars

    Alexlind123 did say,

Your not far too far from the truth Alexlind123, when I used to swing spanners for a Rice Manufacturer that uses the Bull Logo. All the new cars came from the docks sprayed with wax over the whole thing and sometimes plastic over the windshield.

It was usually cleaned off with liberal doses of Kerosene and open weave cotton waste that was disposed of as the Kero would soften the wax and the cotton waste would pull it off without scratching (A major problem with the darker waterbased paints and metallic finishes)

When I left the game, the imports from Japan had dropped as much more was being built here in Oz at the new Altona plant in Melbourne, as it has come online the nessesity to import has decreased, hence not as many waxed vehicals anymore.

I was talking about grey imports to Australia might I point out that there are Absolutely Shitloads of them that were shipped here from the late 90s, which were bought second hand in japan.... so one has to ask if you can ship a jap car privately safely from japan why not one from south africa? I guess the moral of the story is get imports checked for rust.
