painless? or painful. but on the plus side people think you are rich for having an e34. jeez having a e34 at 23 people think you are loaded. 30k australian is only just under 23k USD but thats with a high australian dollar.

    That's because it's a South African import.
    Knocks $10-$15k off the price.
It may even be built by BMW in S.A.

I assume you meant painful too?

On average, even allowing for the exchange rate, we pay around three times what you guys pay for stuff like cars etc. We have 1/10th the population, live miles from the rest of the world and have traditionally had very high import tariffs. In fact back in the days when E34's were new I think import tariffs on imported luxury cars were approaching something like 80%. So you could say we get stiffed when buying stuff over here. BMW parts from the local stealers can be up to 8x what you guys pay!
But don't we just love putting money in the pockets of these thieves... NOT!!!

Beware the private import - not because it comes from South Africa, but because it will have been shipped and exposed to serious amounts of salt and humidity in the shipping without suitable protection - I looked at a '98 523i from the UK (because it was manual) and the corrosion was unbelievable.

Gayle, I hope your prices are nothing like ours !
