    Default Cruise Control Q........

Just wondering if my cruise control is "normal" or not......

When I push the cruise control lever, it takes about 1 - 2 seconds to activate the control, and when it does go on, the speed that it sets is about 3-5 kph slower than the speed when I set it. It has done this since I have had the car (18 months) so is not a new problem, and it holds the speed really well.
On my work vehicle ( a Mercedes Ambulance ) when you hit the cruise lever it instantly maintains the current speed. Quite remarkable for a bucket of snot Mercedes!!

Is there an adjustment I can make, or is this an e34 quirk??

    Thanks guys

Garry, instead of hitting the cruise control push the advance speed direction and it will hold your current speed.

Same small annoyance here. I've just gotten into the habit of tapping the stalk forward twice rather than once. It seems to do the trick.

I will, however, try what Jeff suggested. After I piece my car back together that is

The few times that i have tried to use my cruise control, it hasnt seemed to work. Maybe i just dont know how to use it. We should both probably read the owners manual more thoroughly.

That's not the way it should work and there are no adjustments since it's entirely digital except for the actuator. IIRC, the cruise gets its speed signal from the cluster. Since your car is pretty old, you may have noise on the speed signal caused by bad capacitors in the cluster.

In my '89 535 the cruise engaged instantly and held the set speed exactly.

has anyone tried to strip and 'service' the actuator?

Although I don't see it as an annoyance, my '92 does the same thing. I use the cruise daily during the over-and-back trip along a 7 mile causeway. I just hold the lever forward until the speed is a couple of mph faster than I want and then let it go. Then is holds steady.

Cambridge posted a really nice article on the actuator - do the search for it. From his autopsy, it lools like servicing the thing would be tough, because there is probably no source for parts to repair an injured actuator.
