E30 heater fan control not working

As the title states, the control knob in my '87 325is for the fan blower only works on maximum speed now for some reason. does this indicate a problem with the knob or does the problem lie elsewhere?

Yeah i was thinking that but another E30 owner showed me this fix:

hopefully it's the problem
