Default Automatic Transmission is dead. Can ATF flush help?

I have been dealing with this problem for nearly a year. At first the reverse started to hesitate and eventually the rest of the gears until the computer showed the warning for transmission.
I received a lot of helpful messages regarding this issue through this forum and I thought it is best to sell the car as it is. But have not received any offers yet, so I am reconsidering and researching about rebuilt transmissions.

Someone told me the other day that He had the same problem with his car and the transmission worked fine after flushing the old ATF! Although he had a Honda. Can perhaps a change of ATF resolve the issue?

    Default Maybe....but

that usally works for a sloppy trans, clogged with sludge.

It's a cheap fix if you want to try it, and see if things improve.

Change the filter and fluid....but don't get your hopes up too high, with all those problems you may still end up getting it rebuilt.

    Good luck

I'd be really surprised if anyone could revive a 4hp-22 with a fluid/filter change. At 165k, it has worn frictions, probably leaky seals, and maybe a valve body full of detritus. At best, the fluid will help circulate that junk, and likely loosen up other dirt, causing further damage.

In my mind, the ZF factory reman is the only way to go. 2 year/unlimited mile warranty on parts AND labor, serviceable by any BMW dealership in the US.

    best, whit

    He's in Florida. 530 and 540 didn't exist in '89. Therefore, it's a 4HP22 regardless of if it's 525 or 535.
