Just finished Trans Filter change

and I am a little scared. Everything went great, but I am worried my trans will die now. Some things were different on mine than any write ups I found. A. I had about 12 pan bolts instead of 6. B. My filter did not have an oring, but rather a cork like gasket secured in place already. It seems to drive good now so I guess only time will tell. It took exactly 3 qts, so I hope I got the level right also.

sounds like you have a 91 and up 525, to check the level get it good and warm on a drive and with it running in park or neutral fill till it's running out the hole, unless you have a rare car with a dip stick at which point you get it good and warm and check while running

Ahhh, okay. I will go for about a 1 hr ride or so and come back and check it. It is such a PITA to get it up on all 4 corners! Any tips?

I drive mine up on ramps, block the wheels and then lift the back, put 2 stands plus the jack for extra safety.

You dont want the trans so hot that it burns you! You want it pretty warm but not fully warm and definetly not cold.

One thing that is worrying me is the abscence of the small o-ring. I did not see one come off and did not have one with my new kit. The following pic shows this small ring, but where does it go? The other side of the filter is too big for it to fit and the side showing has a cork type seal on it.

I don't see it on the online ETK for my car either. Oh well, must have been for earlier models.

the gold colored one in the center of the first pic? probably a seal for the drain plug, none of the kits i've used supply one

Mbo, the O ring is used on the 4hp22 kit to assure a good seal between the valve body pickup and the filter itself. I'm relatively certain that the strausbourg hydromatics don't use them.

Driving it for an hour before checking the fluid level might not be such a good idea. If it's low (and they tend to be), it could theoretically be damaging to the trans. I believe the correct procedure is to get the trans warm and then check the level -- I've only done this with a modic III, which will indicate when the trans is warmed up/fluid is ready to be checked. Then get under it with the engine running/car in park, crack the fill screw and top it off.
