Sticking handbrake button

Hi guys! I've just replaced both my handbrake cables and on re-assembly my handbrake lever won't lock in the 'up' position - the button will not pop back out by itself.I have to physically pull the button out to get the ratchet to lock. I removed the lever to get the cables through the guides, but I never disassembled the lever in any way. Any ideas on where I've gone wrong?

Hey thanks very much Bill. Now I've seen your pic I can check the mechanism out.
I'll remove my lever again tomorrow morning - see what's going on!
