Heh, I was just wondering the same thing. I figure, for the same price I can either convert my car to a 5-speed and turbo making 400bhp, or sell it and get a stock E39 540. Don't know which I'd prefer. Certainly the former will give me Porsche-slaying grunt, but the latter is a much more refined mode of transportation.

Only a test drive will tell. In the meantime, I'll keep buying lottery tickets.

Oh, so, needless to say, in answer to your question, the E39 gets my vote.

Or perhaps even one of those rare, late-model manual 740 dealies They seem to be even cheaper than the 5-series, for some reason. VERY tough finding a manual tranny, though. But bargains like this make me drool:
