intermitant ac

the ac on my 91 525 automatic seems to work when it wants to. theres no real consistancy, its just sometimes the green lights for ac and recirc come on and ta da cold air. other days i can press the buttons a hundred times and nothing. any ideas??? thanks

Is this a new problem or has it allways been like that since you've owned the car?

I cant recall it happening last summer. I have had her for about 40k miles. When it occures, all three buttons are out of commision. recirc, ac and rear defrost. Would think it was the switch, but they are seperate switches arnt they???
