Locked out trunk on 1998 328i

A friend can not get in the trunk of her bimmer. I'm not up on these cars. I checked the manual, no help. Trunk button just pushes on with no resistance. Actuater? How can I get in to check and or replace?

Push the trunk down as much as possible while someone tries to unlock the lock.
Any possibility to have access from rear seats, like a ski bag instead of rear seat middle armrest in the E34 and E32?

Thanks Shogun, It has the armrest. I will be looking at it again this weekend. I will try pushing down on it amongst some other things.
