What's that?
I did mine the other day. They had paint scrapes and scratches on the front left, rear left and rear right corners from "touch parking". The black strips sand really easily with some fine-grit paper, then just a little back-to-black type stuff, and they look like new again!
It's a five minute job,and makes a huge difference to the look of the car if you have a little foreign paint hanging around there.

I did it 4 weeks ago... Still black! When I sanded the strips, they were still black, I'm assuming it's solid black plastic. I wanted to wait a couple of weeks before posting, in case it did wash off...
I can't remember the brand of the black stuff, but there are heaps of different types. It's just black goopy stuff you put on tyres and trim to make it go black again.
Wow... all three posts on this thread are from Alpine White cars!
On my E32 they are not completely black. White (-ish) underneath.
