ask any hardcore member here and doing a "search" will tell you, if you love your m30 engine and you want to give here the best lube possible, it's mobil 1, synthetic. "Best" to myself means I consider a "value" for money obejective, as the second criteria and firstly meaning optimal engine lube. What do you want? you want excellent flow rates at low temperatures, ie when you are just starting the car (in the morning), which many people will tell you when most of the engine wear occurs. Best also means at high hardcore/hard use engine use, the oil will provide aqequate protection (via higher operating temperatures). I assume you from the US of A, most of these gentleman choose Mobil 1 0w-40. a market like australia provides oil of the same manufacturer of a wider range being 5w-50.

Maybe some profile details will make it easier for me to answer your question. Redline is around/avaliable, that is more $$$$, I'm under the assumption that 20w-50 is okay and thats the oil that came out wil the engine in 1988 for the e34. This is adequate if you choose to go with a cheaper mineral based oil, since then (regurgitating info now-badly), oil technlogys have imporved and you would be doing yourself a diservice if you did not use a fully synthetic oil like Mobil-1. she will love you for it

Previously used 15W-50 Mobil 1, and now run 5W-50 Syntec (Castrol synthetic) for the slightly lower range on cold start. Any synthetic is good - matct the higher number to your ambient temperatures as indicated by BMW.
