brake linings circuit

Does the "brake linings" message come on when the brake wear sensor circuit is broken (open), or when it is completed (closed)?

The warning comes on when the circuit is open. Sometimes the wires are broken no where near the sensor. I traced mine to an area near the abs pump.

everytime I go over a bigger bump, the warning comes on...
