    Default New instrument cluster...

Apparently, I need a new instrument cluster... Guages keep going mad, I cant read the mileage, and sometimes the computer display disappears... Does this look like the right one for my car??

Default No, its not the right one for your car, you'll need a

unit from the same year that you have since your coding plug is in the harness not in the back of the cluster like the one on ebay. Why don't you just do the capacitor changeout thats on Bruno's site?

Well I'm not technically gifted, even when following instructions!! I dont have a solder iron either, and I'm just worried I will make the problem worse!! I can handle swapping out a cluster, but taking one apart is quite daunting...

Default Taking it apart is easy, there are plenty of sites that show you how such as

    Bruno capacitor page

And Winston Fong has a good writeup on it except i disagree with how he gets it out..

And heres my page on removing the cluster
Anyway once you get it out and apart take the circuit board to a radio or tv electronics repair shop and just pay them to replace the caps that are listed on the sites.. They should be willing to do it very reasonably compared to getting another cluster that may do the same thing since capacitors die as they get older.

Good idea! I'm gonna have a go at it this weekend. Could the faulty cluster also be the cause of my "brake linings" message that keeps coming up?? I have checked the pads, and all seem fine...

Brake linings message is probably a different thing. Check the wires of the sensors. Probably they are broken or you did not replace them when changing the linings. Only a few $.
