    Default muffler EXPLODED!!!!

    heheh
i saw this on another bmw board that im on

    Hello all,

On starting my 1989 525i today there was an extremely loud bang from the back of my vehicle.

I believe that the vehicle suffers from over-fuelling during startup and I think a sufficient amount of fuel found its way into the rear muffler, causing quite a nasty explosion when it ignited.

As the pictures below show the muffler casing has exploded outwards causing significant damage to the bumper!

Default The precat or the thermal reactor... the old rx7's 78,79,80 had a

thermal reactor up at the exhaust manifold as a precursor to the cat..
they didn't put the cats on till i think 81 and got rid of the pos thermal reactors... just like the ones i used to hate on the first generation emission catalyst 911's. at any rate my 79 rx had a thermal reactor

on my 83 the pre cat was hollow when i took it off to hollow it out and the main cat was a pellet type, unscrewed the plug and dumped them out and pulled out the steel wool, it ran much better, that's about the most fun you can have with 100 hp and 100lb of torque

The exact same thing happened to the previous owner of my car, the silencer split down the side. Luckily there was no damage to the bumper. I've only recently thrown the pipe away, or I would have taken a photo for you. As you all are probably aware, I bought my car as a non-runner with engine bearing problems. When I re-installed my rebuilt block I noticed that the P O had made some botched repairs to "fix" the surging idle, eg vacuum pipes removed, throttle position sensor switch out of line, not allowed to close. This thing must have idled at 1600 rpm!!!! I'm not really surprised the rear silencer blew out - there is already a lot of fuel being injected on a cold start, so to add even more to the mix will result in great pyrotechnics!

    Cheers,

    Shaun

That guy should buy a new set of tires when he gets the muffler fixed.
