Doesn't crutchfield carry the radio harnesses? I've also seen them on eBay. I think I got a pair of roundells @ BMA for around $19.00 when I first got this car.

Yes Crutchfield sells them. I just got a Alpine HU from them for my '93 525 and they included the wiring harness free. Just follow the wireing diagram they give you. I soldered all the connections and used shrink wrap over them. Don't forget you DO need the power antenna wire. I didn't think I needed it and got very poor raidio reception. (mostly AM only) I pulled the whole thing back out and soldered that wire on and now everything is fine. I think you will also need an adapeter because of the negative ground in the BMW sound system. Crutchfield sells them too. It's a bit tricky getting the whole thing to fit in the dash, but it will fit.

Guys -- Kyle's car has a pre-universal radio harness (universal supposedly showed up in '90 and later cars).

There's no way to get around it -- the pre univ. harness has to be spliced to work with an aftermarket radio. Alternatively, since the harness for the radio/speakers/amp is separate from the body harness, you could always hunt down a > '91 radio harness, install that (!! -- a bit time consuming, but not by any means hard) and then buy crutchfield/autozone/whoever's wiring kit.

if i have to splice to attach a 90 plus harness, i might as well just splice my aftermarket radio one, actually what i am running now is quite interesting, i dident want to take off my old connecters because i feared i would be going back to stock, so what i did was got female connecters, and attached those to my aftermarkey HU, then the bmw connectors slid right in, giving me the option to stop it whenever i want to.

you can install any thing ... you can buy some pins and insulate them to save the connector. make sure you have or dont have the amplifier in the trunk so you would know what type of main deck u need. as if u have the amplifier in the trunk what ever the power you have on the main deck you will still get the same power. there is a good Sony system with MP3 player built in and CD player too .. full digital interface. I just saw it today in a VR6 Golf. your going into a wide area of choises ... just make sure what fits your listening. good luck
