I would pay up to a hundred if the owner guarantees it not to be scrap, a lot of work to replace your box with another scrap unit.
A friend of mine who emigrated from Canada to the US (D.C) has located an e34 535 parts car. He has offered to pull the box and ship it, but wonders what to offer the owner.
Maybe somone here has a 'tight' steering box for sale?
Thanks in advance,
DAve M

I'm pulling the engine this winter, so should make things a 'bit' easier.
Thanks Jeff,

at least you dont have the V8, thats a REAL chore. Without an engine in there it should be a breeze!

if you go to http://car-part.com, they have 1990 535i boxes from $400 to $100, none of them seem to have warranties. i guess the min is about 100$ USD or so?
There's a site, jorgenauto.com, that sells rebuilt steering boxes with lifetime warrenties for 250$. the info on the warrenty is oddly written, i think it might apply on with professional installation, but i haven't bothered to call them and clarify.

Thanks guys.
It seems that the box is one of the more expensive used parts around (segua to a sex joke). Seeing as most go south after a few 100k, and they're not that easy to recondition as a DIY, you're kinda hooped. I'll have to budget a bit more I suppose.
