the M43 is the successor of the M40 engine (there were built E34 518i M40 (113hp), too). the M43 has a timing chain (M40: belt) and roller levers, the M40 has not.

Thats about right.
I had a 518 saloon as my previous car ( had about 200,000 miles on it with very few problems until the crash), That was an M40. It would do up to 40MPG on a long run, and about 25 around town. Wouldn't do more than 110 MPH, was a bit gutless but not awful. (wouldn't want to go back though, not after my 530)
