Press it with the pedal and it selects the best lower gear for optimum passing power. If your in 4th, but should be in 2nd to pass, it will put you in 2nd.

what is the thing under the accelerator pedal for? is it simply to reduce the maximum distance that the pedal can travel or does it do something else?

I've got a 540i 6-Speed, and you can screw it in our out. It kinda seems like a primitive throttle limiter... But I don't know.
