Default BMW 535 taillights out problem

I'm posting this on behalf of a friend. They are the original owner of a garaged, very low mileage, very well maintained (always by dealer until this year) 1994 BMW 535 sedan. Starting recently, when the headlight switch is turned on, the taillight warming lamp on the dashboard comes on. None of the taillights are lit. When the brake pedal is depressed both brake lights do come on. The amber turn signals in the rear also work. The license plate lamp is lit and all side marker lights are lit. There is no problem with the headlights. There does not appear to be any rust or corrosion at the rear or around the bulb housings. They have replaced the taillight bulbs and replaced the fuses labeled right and left taillight with the spare fuses in the fuse box under the hood. The problem persists. Can anyone offer a suggestion or remedy? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

$20 says it's the third brake light (center high-mount, on the back deck).

    ...am I right?
