You need to see which one your car came with, I would guess the 140A. I would not skimp on the source for the alternator. You should get a Bosch reman - a lot of the local rebuilt stuff is junk. Will blow up 6 months after you put it on.

Is it a failed alternator, or just the voltage regulator?
Could even be a simple as replacing worn regulator brushes, which cost next to nothing.
If just the regulator, an aftermarket replacement (including brushes) can be had for ~$13 at local parts stores, and it plugs into the outside rear of the alternator case. Just be sure to disconnect the battery first, making note of the radio anti-theft code before you do, to re-set the radio after reconnecting the battery.
The Bosch voltage regulators cost abt. 45 $. But there are much cheaper no-name products on the market like this one:

This might not fit yours, but you could contact that company.
Have no experience with these no name regulators, maybe someone can tell his experience.
I also want to buy a spare voltage regulator for my E32 750iL VIN 3055570. Does someone know the Bosch number for that and/or the number of one of the no-name products. It is just for spare, so only just for day X when I do not want to pay the $$$ to the dealer.
