Huh, I was under the impression that the E39 M5 wheels only came in 18" sizes, but the do appear to be genuine BMW with the M badges and everything.

I'm gonna see if I can get in touch with him to check the wheels out in person. Any markings I should look for to clue me in as to who made these? Because I was under the impression those wheels only came in an 18x8 on the M5.
The offset would have to be stamped on there somewhere, right?

Most replicas come with M badges anyway. They could be either made in Italy, Taiwan or China. Ask for a clear closeup picture inside the wheel. That should tell you whether they're original or not.
