While I love my 535i, I've been dreaming alot lately about a 750il with the V12. Twelve cylinders! So cool. For under $10K too.
Anyone have experience with them, are they reliable like a M30? They must just haul ass on the highway. Please share your experiences with the M70, I need some reasons I can justify buying another BMW.
here in the uk, you cant give them away, usually selling for under £1000, which is about $1700!!!
combination of high fuel prices, cost of maintaining the monster, especially as most are well past their prime
Initial purchase price is deceptive though, you could quite easilly spend that again in 1 year of maintenence and running
its a nice car, I personally prefer the M60 V8 4.4L engine, the V12 is more complicated; 2 DMEs, 2MAFs, 2 Throttle servos, 12 spark plugs that are deep in the sides. it's like 2 engines that are tuned to be %99,9 identical.
after all it's a 290HP, and the V8 4.4 is 286HP. I felt that the V8 has better pickup than the 750 V12.

We've been dismantling and rebuilding M70/73s recently for various projects. They pretty much don't require service. Valve gaskets leak, they will because of age or because of mileage. They can be done in the car, but, again -- you'll need good tools and patience.
For what it's worth, we usually spend a grand on them. Hottest deal to date was a sub-$1000 southern car on the 'bay, had a minor electrical fire due to a hack installing O2 sensors. The PO thought that was what kept it from running. It was actually out of gas and the fuel level sender was stuck. The car's now one of our loaners.
One thing to remember is that the V12 E32/E38 is a completely different car than an E34 535/5. Just make sure you want that soft cushy ride before buying one. Or bring it over to us and we'll drop a 6 speed in it.

I love v12's. I would love to own an 850, Probably the only car i would trade my 540i for, maybe.
But really, if your not a mechanic, be ready to make a few house payments for yours. Its probably cheaper to own a boat than a 750il. Every one at the dealer except the rare masochist will hate you when you pull up on the concourse, they will all peer up in the service area to see what service advisor you are talking to, then that entire team will suddenly go to lunch, have to go home since they wife is having a baby, or have sudden wildly contagious flu symptoms.
Ahhh but they sound soooo cool when they start, run sooo smooth and accelerate so nicely, you won't really care what they think.

I believe I know more than Mr average BMW technician and that is why people from all over the world send me emails and ask for advice.
For the 'normal' BMW shop a 750 is really a problem, they do not know the car that much and that is why they think that car is not good.
And yes, best is to break your arms 6 times before you start working in the engine room to get to all the parts.Just to remove spark plug # 12 takes about 1 1/2 hours.

Now the only thing you would need to worry about would be the 12/17MPG or 15 combined... Given it is better than the XJS fuel economy, at a price of $3.20 per gallong its getting a bit out of hand...

Your prices are really cheap still. Lat saturday I paid the first time $ 5.05/gallon.
But as long as the highway and city highway toll / fee is still more, I don't mind. Or needless to complain.
In Europe people complain about even higher prices. And here in Japan it is a bit cheaper than Europe, but they charge highway fees. City Highway in Tokyo costs me about 7 $ at the entrance, no matter if I leave the next exit again after 2 miles or not.
somehow that doesnt comfort me, to put it into prospective we have had over 300% increase in a couple years. lets say 3 years from now you pay 15.00 a gallon, follow my logic?

Seeing how this is the official bitch about gas prices thread, anyone notice that all the gas companies made record profits last year? But, the prices are high because of supply and demand, riiiiiiiiiiight.
Mate be careful, apart from the engine I've heard its a **** box. Go to a 7 series forum and see what they reckon.

There is a mint 750il in Birmingham Michigan with only 57,000 miles on it, owner is asking $12,500. Says garage kept and the house in the background tells me the dude is wealthy, so the car probably got all the proper service. Autotrader.com
About gas prices in North America? We're all being bent over the table and f*cked up the ass by the oil companies. Period. No natural market force can explain the high variability in gas prices we've seen here in the last year. Changes of more than 10 cents a litre over night? Variances of 10 cents a liter between stations less than 2km apart? Supply and demand do not cause such things. We're being raped by big oil and doing nothing about it.
I recommend, only to the extent of minimal punishment or not getting caught at all, for everyone to start costing gas stations money. Figure out how. And it doens't seem like such a crazy idea when you accept that they really are gouging prices.
Unfortunately, the stations aren't making the money. I've talked to local owners that only make $.02 per gallon. It's the companies selling them the oil, the big companies, that make the cash.

Only the 740V8 and the European 730V8 with the 5HP30 trans, same like the E34 540.
You do not have to go to a 7 series forum, because I am answering also there as the authority for E32 750 :D ;)
Basically it is very easy. Fuel prices are high = these cars are sitting at the dealers and no one wants to buy them except some crazy guys like me.
My calculation however is different. I do not drive a lot, less than 5 K miles per year, I can get a luxury car with a 12-cylinder for a bargain price, I repair them as I have the skills, the diagnostic tools, the special tools, and spare parts cars, and it is my hobby.
That makes it very cheap in maintenance for me.
BUT in case you have to bring the car to the dealer for every small problem, it will cost you a fortune to maintain it. It was a luxury top of the line car, the parts prices are still top of the line, and you do not find many skilled technicians for this car, as they maybe have to work on a 750 once a year or have never done before so, depending on where you live.

Hmm.. gas is going up 10 cents a day. Hybrids are estimated to sell 7% more next quarter. Iran wants to blow non-muslem countries off the planet. I dunno. I think I'll ride this V8 thing out for awhile. It is a beautiful car though.
Honestly my next car will probably be a Toyota Prius or a hydrogen car. 2 plates of metal, water, electric current and wham. Guess I oughta start raising gerbils for that wheel O' electric current. Nasty lil critters, but it's better than walkin to work.
