Driving suggestions for a quick lil road trip

Unfortunately I am needing to get back as soon as possible. Anyone think this is the fastest route? Any truckers in the house that have made this run?

I have a sister in Carbondale and an old friend in Sante Fe, but if I knew what was good for me with two small children and an agro wife waitin for me, I'd be sleeping in truck stops and keeping the hammer down on this baby..

Boise airport to Austin....is this the fastest way for a 3/4 ton 57 telephone truck that I won't be breaking 70mph in?

I've got no advice regarding the directions, but i hope you have a blast. I'm hankerin for a road trip myself, but have to wait a month ;(

I would be a bit worried about the high elevation most of your route takes. Denver is I think 5k' and sante fe is like 7k', not to mention you have to cross the continental divide on you route I believe. You will be on well traveled roads through much of it. What little fuel economy you have will go right out the window when you cross about 4.5k', so bring alot of gas money. carburated engines don't deal so well with high elevation, and any vacuum issues the truck has will magnify alot when you get to a higher area. Not to mention 10mile long declines with I assume drum brakes makes me a bit nervouse.

On the other hand, if you head almost due south past Las Vegas, you can aviod most of the high Elevation and then head east through the Mohave, which should still be cool enough at this time of year to travel. Since the truck is from TX, you already know it deals with the local climate.The problem with this of course, is you go off the well traveled routes for most of the trip. But you will pass through some of the most unbeleivable landscape on the planet.

If it was up to me, I'd find a way to get an extra day and take the route that passes along the western slopes of the rockies and the sierra nevada. Even though Eastern California is not highly populated, there are plenty of villiages and small towns along the route. There is a good chance the longer route will cost the same or maybe even cheaper than going over the mountains.

I am driving South from Boise airport to Austin. The truck has lived in Idaho its whole life.

The truck is carburated for Idaho. I wonder how it will behave as I leave the mountains toward the flats of Texas.

I was thinking if I followed the yahoo map and went East immediately, I'd pretty flat the rest of the way South. If I head due South straight from Boise, I will have to cross mountains for sure heading to New Mexico.

Everything is perfect, and the PO has redone the brakes for me. It's ready to drive non-stop...so he says.

Ahhhh, cool. I misunerstood. Idaho get some respectable elevations so it should huf and puf its way up to Sante Fe, good bet the carb has been rebuilt 1/2 dozen times or so, it should have a reasonable compromise on the jetting. Boise is under 3k'? so should be fine in austin which is close to sea level, may need to get the carb settup for low elevation anyway. I know the land slopes off gently eastward from Sante Fe, I've never driven that route south eastward, but I've driven east on i40 many times, I'd think the terrain is about the same, lots of scrub and not much to look at compared to what you have already driven through.

the drive from Salt lake to Cheyenne is nice, as is Idaho in general if you like hilly country. Shame you don't get to see much of Utah though, I'm not sure I have been to a place more desolate and beutiful than Utah. Parts of it are like driving on the moon.

have fun, I'm going to take my kid out to that area in a year or 2 when he a gets old enough to really enjoy it.

Used to drive from Oregon to Santa Fe and back in the college days in random college clunkers including a '51 GMC 3/4 ton. Didn't figure I'd save much time being passed on the freeways, so I would try and staight line it. For instance: Salt Lake, Spanish Fork, Price, Green River, Moab, Monticello, Cortez, Durango. You might consider that. Freeways are boring under 80.

Mapquest is basically the same except it sends you east at Denver to pick up I-35 in Kansas

Anyone have a better route i.e quicker, as I no choice (wife) but to get back as soon as possible ???

are you running one? Cant believe how clean his oil was at the change time.

not me, id rather change it 5-6000 like cummins says and not have the mess and expence to deal with, this thing is allready the cleanest diesel i've seen on oil (even with 309k miles), usually as soon as you pour it in and start it it's transformed into black ****, but this thing at 2-3k was still looking golden and at 4-5k is finally starting to get black. there are guys running 20k or so miles on dino oil and others over 50k on synthetic with bypass filtration and oil testing
