Ok, so I drive hard sometimes, and my cars full power comes in just below 6000 rpm. When I am in a hurry, or accelerating, I sometimes rev to almost 6000 rpm. If I maintain my car, and take care of it, does taking it to high rpm do damage?? Just curious. I havent had any probs outta my car. I make sure that i dont take it over 3500 rpm until it is in the middle of the temp gauge. Any comments on this??
unable to give professional mechanical advice however it sounds like thats how it should be bloody well driven every now and again. i do with mine, gotta get the cobwebs out and all.
When I had the stock chip, it would barely move until it hit ~4000 RPM. Now that it's sharked, it'll pull from as little as 2500... But I know how you feel :)
Short of increased engine wear, doesn't hurt anything.
How much wear are we talking here. Like 20,000 miles reduction in life?Quote:

What about in an automatic tranmission? I heard somewhere that high revs hurt our crappy transmission or something?
i'm sure they can. my tranny is going to disenigrate soon, i'm sure. but that;ll jsut be an excuse to do an MT conversion, so no worries.
I knew about nikasil, but never knew about the crap transmission when i bought the car. I should keep away from S4 now.

See?!? WTF?!? We cant even rev the engine with this transmission. BMW shouldve made a recall or something.
whats the purpose of revving it up in neutral anyways? Not like its open headders and we need the neighbors to be all pissed off.
...then some preventative for known bugs w/your engine/tranny...w/right (quality) parts/fuilds then drive the crap out of your can and enjoy it - you'll both be happy.
probably a little extreme to redline 6K rpm every shift (besides blowing speed limits) but here and there don't think will hurt for the grin factor... DRIVE THE CAR!
Youre right, but id still like to know that i could rev it if i wanted. Its kinda like the new M5. Alot will be mad that the car is limited to 155mph, even though the car can do 200mph. Most drivers will probably never reach 200 even if the limiter wasnt there, but its nice to know that the car could go 200 if the owner really wanted to.Quote:

I quote from page 69 of my BMW owner's manual:
"After driving for a while in dense city traffic or bumper to bumper, we recommend letting your engine "take a deep breath" by covering the next mile or two at engine speeds of 3000 rpm. This will help eliminate any carbon build-up in the cylinders."
It's conclusive, y'all...BMW recommends some engine revving every-now-and-then! YEE HAW! :D
is there like a maximum amount of time your suppose to rev it that high?
for example...I rev it up to like 6,000 rpm for not even a second about once a week...is this too often? would it start making noticable damage doing it more often?
your fine even blasting it to the red a few times a day, these things arent made out of pot metal and can take a lot more abuse than that.
Is that not why God invented rev limiters??
My M30 sounds GREAT up in the rev range!!
I often hit the rev limiter in my car - I use the limiter as a "sort of" shiftlight, just as the engine cuts at 6700 or so, change up. It's so easy to do. I have no concerns at all about it. I rebuilt the block two years ago and it's still running sweet. I would suggest before driving at high rpm you know your timing belt (on M20's anyway) is good and your valves are well adjusted and don't rattle. Frequent oil changes are a wise idea. If your engine sounds like a bag full of hammers then fix it first, or one of your pistons may just go airborne!!!

Removing the speed limit is quite easy. I think not one car in my country has it - it gets removed less than a weak after import. :)Quote:
