I had a tail light out, and when I looked into replacing the bulb I noticed the hole in the rear of the tail light housing that the bulb & socket go in is kinda melted and all tweaked... so I need a whole new left side tail light.
Does anyone have a spare in really nice condition laying around?
my other option is the blacked out Hellas for sale on ebay all the time. Are they legal in the states?
You had a too high wattage bulb in there. The correct BMW ones will not melt the plastic, so make sure you put the right bulb in next time or it will happen again to your new light.
perhaps, but I personally have never changed a bulb in that tail light. The way it was stuck in there, it looks like the prior owner hadn't seated it right, and the contacts may have created a small arc, because the plastic opposite the bulb side looks pretty brown.Quote:

Auto Zone sells the correct type of bulb, it's a Sylvania brand bulb in green packaging. There is one that fits in orange/yellow packaging, but it's too hot for the tail light assembly. The green one works just fine.

The owners manual gives the details.
I think I've got a good left taillight- let me put my hands on it to make sure its in good shape + I'll let you know.

If it's the light that goes in the fender I have both left and right I just took off to replace with clears. If Bret's doesn't work for you let me know.
