ASC/Cruise Control/Throttle bowden cable Replacement Cont.

Throttle Cable

The first cable I decided to replace was the throttle cable. There was no real reason for this other than my belief that it would be the easiest, unfortunately, I was wrong.

Before you can actually get to removing the throttle cable you must first disassemble a few things. I started by removing all of the lower dash covering from below the instrument cluster.

This will give you access to the end of the throttle cable attatched to the accelerator pedal. Before you remove the cable from the accelerator pedal arm for lack of a better word, you need to remove your engine cover and remove the cable from the throttle plate. You don't absolutely have to do this but this will take the tension off of the cable and will provide more slack at the other end.

Now the goal is to get the throttle cable off of the arm it is attatched to. This is not terribly difficult if you twist the cable all the way through the hole to the right so that only the wire is through the grommet. This allows more room to pry the grommet out with a flat blade screw driver.

Possibly the most difficult step in removing the throttle cable is getting it through the firewall. The plastic clip that holds the cable in place is very difficult to compress and push through so some brute force may be required. Since you are working in probably one of the most uncomfortable positions, getting this step done quickly is preferred. Since this cable is going in the trash anyway, do not be afraid to twist and beat on the plastic clip. The only way I was able to finally push the clip through the firewall was to twist the clip sideways with a pair of pliers then take a long flat blade screwdriver and punch it through the firewall. I do not have a picture of this process but you can see what I am talking about in the previous pictures. Once the clip goes through you can get out of the cramped space under the dash and move to the engine compartment.

Now that you are in the engine compartment looking at the accelerator cable you wonder where on earth it goes. Obviously the cable runs behind the heater valve but is that as far as it goes or does it go under the fuse box? To put it simply, yes, it only goes as far as the heater valve. At this point you may be wondering what you got yourself into, removing the heater valve is more than you bargained for right? Luckily, all you have to do is take the three 13mm bolts off and push the heater valve/auxilary water pump out of the way. I moved it just enough that I could place it around the bolt furthest away. This helps keep it out of the way. Now, look down, theres the end of your throttle cable, ready to be pulled out. From here, removal and installation of the new cable is self explanatory.

Fishing the new cable through that small hole is not easy but not impossible by any means. once you get the end through the hole you can move back under the dash and pull the cable along with the black clip through and you are almost done. Place the grommet in the hole of the accelerator pedal arm then push the end of the cable through as the original was. Hook the other end of the cable to the throttle plate with your new bearing as BMA calls them, push the grommet through the designated hole, and push the tensioner through the grommet. Some adjustment may be necessary, just make sure you don't put too much tension on it or your idle speed will raise.

You have now completed the process of replacing your throttle cable. All you have to do now is put your dash back together.
