ASC/Cruise Control/Throttle bowden cable Replacement Cont.

ASC Cable

The ASC bowden cable is between the difficulty of replacing the throttle cable and replacing the cruise control cable. To replace the ASC bowden cable you must remove the ASC actuator to get the cable out. You will need your 10mm socket with enough extensions to reach one of the bolts, then you will need the 10mm ratcheting/pivoting wrench to remove the other bolt. You may also need a pair of pliers as well to twist the wrench if you have a short handled one like I do.

So that you can access the ASC actuator from below you will need to remove your left foglight by removing the one phillips head screw and pulling the light out.

Once you take the foglight out you have a clear view of the ASC actuator. From above, the actuator is to the left of the cruise control actuator. You will be able to see both bolts that hold the actuator in place but will only be able to loosen one from above. I do not have pictures of the bolts I am referring to but I can add them upon request.

In the upper left corner of the above image you see the ASC cable. A grommet is holding this cable in place much like the one that was holding the throttle cable in place near the expansion tank. Difficulty of removal may vary but in my case I had to tug pretty hard to get the gromet out. Instead of dealing with the gromet first however, I took my needlenose pliers and pulled the ASC cable from the actuator body. When you look at the new cable you will see how it comes out and goes back in. I then proceeded to cut the cable. Remember, these old cables are going in the trash so it does not matter what you do to them.

Remove the bottom of the actuator housing to remove the old cable and to install the new cable.

Now all you have to do is bolt the ASC actuator to its bracket, run the cable up to the engine compartment, put the gromet in place, and thread the end of the cable through the throttle body housing and you are done. Don't forget to plug the power back in to the actuator, otherwise your ASC light will be on when you start your car.

Install your foglight and whatever else you may have taken apart and you are done. Make sure to check the tension on all of the new cables so that they are just tight enough. You have now completed the installation of the ASC/Cruise Control/Throttle bowden cables.
