ASC/Cruise Control/Throttle bowden cable Replacement Cont.

Cruise Control Cable

In retrospect, replacing the cruise control cable was much easier than replacing the throttle cable. There is not much to replacing the cruise control cable, it is just a matter of being able to work blindly. Since this is a fairly straighfoward task, moreso than replacing the throttle cable, I do not have as many pictures.

The cruise control actuator is located just below the brake master cylinder. This is a tight spot and you cannot see much but it is possible to replace the cruise control cable with a big enough screw driver. The first picture below shows the cruise control actuator. The second, if you look just above the bolt on the brake master cylinder is where you need to place the largest flat blade screw driver you have. The reason I say the largest is because a thinner blade will slide between the clip and the hole you pushing the cable through. If the blade is fatter you will find it is easier to press the clip down and pull the cable out.

To pull the cable out, with your right arm, reach between the engine and the brake booster and grab the cable, it has a large end so you can't miss it. With your left hand, press down with your screw driver to release the tab. You will notice that the cable is still attatched once you pull it out. The barrel on the cable is in a belt attatched inside of the cruise actuator. This belt will not retract if you let go if it making it easier to get the new cable installed.

For a more detailed look at the cruise control actuator, refer to this pdf, compliments of www.bmw-540i.com

Once you have the end of the new cable attatched to the belt and the whole cable locked into place and routed, you are done replacing the cruise control cable.
