View Full Version : Frozen wheel lug

What is the best procedure for removing a frozen-on wheel lug?

I've applied JB Blaster penetrating oil, and even broke a Craftsman 17mm socket, with no luck so far.

also hit it with a hammer to shock it

Tap on the head of the lug bolt with a hammer- this should loosen it's grip on the wheel a bit- you also might have luck using an impact wrench (air or electric)- they usually create enough shock to crack the lug loose.

Leverage can be your friend, but if you use a pipe over a breaker bar- make sure you are not applying the twisiting force at an angle- you'll be more likely to break the head off the bolt if you do. One of those "X" shaped 4 way lug wrenches with the correct size end can be useful too.

18" flex breaker bar and 1/2" 17mm socket. I still have yet to find a bolt that I cannot get off.

Well, you're a better man than I, Gungadin, cuz that's exactly how I broke the Craftsman 17mm socket. This sucker is pretty ornery.

Use impact socket instead... Sears will give you new socket for free.

I agree w/ tiger.

My car SAT in a field for 2 yrs prior to my buying it. One of the rear BBS caps was lost during that time.

For the life of me, I couldn't get the lugs out (wasps had also made nests in the holes) Even with a Craftsman 350lb impact wrench (broke the STANDARD socket as well as the impact converter).

So I went to NAPA and bought a 17mm deep well impact socket.

Took them out in no time. Then I had to unfuse the hub and wheel...that was fun :)

PB Blaster is awesome...so is antiseize.
