Hi guys,

Unfortunately my 1994 540 E34 has just lunched its gearbox.

She is making a horrible screeching noise so I am not driving her at all.

I am based near London in the UK and would be really grateful for any personal reccomendations of good gearbox specialists that can rebuild this hugely complicated gearbox properly.

Also I would be really grateful if people could advise on the upgrades that should be done and parts that I should ask to be changed as a matter of course when the gearbox is being rebuilt.

Many thnaks for you help.

Ben. currently without my 540! :(

A1 Gearboxes in St. Neots come recommended. Unfortunately I went with the *other* recommendation (not A1, somewhere in Hertfordshire, I won't name and shame) I received when I needed a rebuild (5hp30, 1993 540i also) and the car's just going back for about the fifth go. At their expense, but causing considerable hassle for me. Sigh.

when the box on my 316 died, BMW heathrow (--it died while they were road testing it after a service, would you believe, after I told them it was showing signs of slipping) recommended Stephens, 0208 889 8181. They were good; no probs after several years

Widely available... it is simply a rebuild kit with updated parts used in current ZF tranny.
