I've been offered a 4.4 (98 840,auto) engine.Is it a straight swap for my 4.0 litre manual?Sort of kills two birds with one stone - Torque++ no nikasil.Thoughts?

In short, no. As far as I know only one person has tried this swap and has yet to work out all the kinks. There is a slight increase in torque but no horsepower gain. It isn't worth the effort, really. Find a nice Alusil engine or do a rebuild.

First of all Hi to everyone as I am new here.I have a S/C '95 4.4L 540i 6 spd and a '90 535i 5 spd.Yes it can be done because I have done it.However to keep a complex job as simple as possible I used a factory new '96 4.4L engine because of OBD1.You will need to do some sensor(eg crank position) exchanging.Also the 4.0L head will not work on the 4.4L.And the 4.4L is 310hp not the 280+ that BMW claims.The engine truely feels a ton more poweful.Of course I also supercharged mine

I'm sort of setting this up as a project:The V8 is a thing of great sculptural beauty!I'm assuming a swap will involve a full engine including the various sensors and meters,so hopefully I can connect into the main loom...or will this involve getting down and dirty with the ECU and associated systems.
The roads in England are barely long enough for a 4.0...supercharged would probably land me somewhere in France!(or Jail :( )

talk about engine envy. you already have the 4.0 in your touring!!! There's probably less than 10 540iT e34's in the US at all.

sheesh

I'm in England...V8 engines are something of a rarity here.Most mechanics here seem scared of them,I think of the V8 as being a bit like two motorbike engines welded together and maintain accordingly.The car is a manual..I'll post pics.

old post but they should bolt right up, at the factory they didnt know what they would go to so they pretty much should only be a difference of CC and HP
