I didn't think we were breeding and slaughtering cows for their skins...I always thought that was just a fringe benefit....protests (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=857&u=/nm/20050207/od_uk_nm/oukoe_odd_germany_mercedes&printer=1)

its unbelievable the stupidity of some people. would it be a bad thing if they just buy something that dont use leather at all, why passify them? Why bother?? Who cares what they think at all...like they kill cows for the skins and throw the rest into dumpsters... this is hmm... Butters!

Either I am getting old and losing my liberal edge - or these people have just moved too far close to the lunatic fringe. PETA has always been a bunch of nut jobs. I agree with the ban on clubbing baby seals for coats however - what are we gonna do with the rest of the cow after we eat our steak?

These guys are losing their original vision and charter. Hey once you enlist Al Sharpton to go after KFC for more ethical treatment of Chickens..... you have sunk pretty low. - JT

Funny, funny movie about a corporate-type NYC couple who decide to drop out of society, get a motorhome and see America while eating grilled cheese sandwiches. James Brooks and Julie Hagerty are in it (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089504/).

Anyway, the point here is that early on in the movie is a scene where Brooks is still at his job and is talking on the phone to a Mercedes dealer about the new car he wants to buy. "Hans" wants to make the sale and is trying to close the deal but Brooks wants the price a little bit lower. Brooks asks Hans if that price includes leather. Hans says, "No, leather will cost you more. This includes what we call 'Mercedes Leather'....very nice vinyl, you'll love it. So, do we have a deal??" Brooks says, "Gee, I'd think that for that much money the car would include leather!" "OK, OK..." Hans says. "If you really want leather I'll throw some shoes in the back. What do you say? Do we got a deal??"

Anyway, I guess you have to see it. I just remember it from years ago as being a funny movie. Especially after a few beers.

As a breeder of cattle that end up being slaughtered (shock, horror), I can assure them that no-one could afford to buy leather if that is all that cattle were slaughtered for.
I wonder what their shoes are made from ?
Next they will be boycotting wool because sheep can get cold after they have been shorn !

The problem with common sense is that it isn't very common !

And THAT's one of the reasons why some of the industrial societies and their economies are in such a bad state!!

There is a famous saying....
Beware when the minorities rule the majority!

So true.....
