I've been thinking of putting a chip in my 95 540ia in hopes to improve fuel economy. I'm currently getting 15mpg in the city and 20-22 on the highway, will a chip help and if so what is the best one to get. I already have a cold air intake system on the car.

Get an EAT Chip; Archives have some reviews on file.
My mileage went to 17 city 26 highway on the average.

very hard to improve on too, usually you lose performance when you modify it.

I am in Toronto, you can easily get a chip from me today if you are here also, or I'll ship it out to you.

I bought one of Mark's chips about 6 weeks and have had an increase of of 3 to 4 mpg on the highway. As I do most of my driving on the open road I don't know if my city milage has improved, but I think it has....Anyway the chip gave me a lot more low and mid range grunt. I have been a bit apprehensive to go out and test the new 150+ top end...but that baby gets from 100km to 200km in a big hurry. I'm out on the oxygen rich canadian west coast right at sea level, so this may also help a bit.

Mark is a great guy to deal with...you can't go wrong.

I've gone from the Dinan chip, to the Conforti chip to Mark's EAT chip. Mark's increases your driveablility and mpg in city or highway driving. It's singly the best performance mod you can do.

On my last visit to T.O. Mark was kind enough to let me have a spin around the neigbourhood in his 93 M5...very nice ride, probably running 3.8-like 94/95 M5 power out of the '93's 3.6 with his own E.A.T. chip. Since Mark hadn't had the pleasure of driving a 540i/6 yet, I tried to "objectively" give him my impressions of my EAT-chipped 540i/6 compared to his M5. Both are monsters, Mark's M5 needing to be kept up in the RPMs more than my big 8 to make power, but probably winning by a slight hair in the "total power under the curve" department. The M5 on 18" M-parallels is just a tad firmer than the M-technic and 17" on my car (recently found that's what my 540i/6 came from the factory with chatting to shop supr at BMW Toronto). The lighter weight of Mark's big-6 compared to my 8 is also noticable, but I figure there is only a tad more understeer on my car than Mark's. Body roll is almost the same, slightly less of course with the M5. Like others have said, you couldn't deal with a nicer guy! Come the summer and The Beast siting back on ContiSport2 235/255-17's, I'll drop by Mark's and return the favour. :)

...oh yeah, I get 2-3 more mpg on the highway and about 1.5-2 more in the city (~18/19 city, 28-29 hwy) with the chip.

Cheers,
Duey

but only 12-14 around town. i have a heavy foot due to the need for the feeling of getting pulled back into the seat. after all this is why i bought a 540i.
Mark makes a well tuned chip.

What kind of mileage difference would the EAT chip give me. I'm not getting great mileage now only 15mpg city and 21 highway

around 19-20 city and 25-26 highway with some pretty fun driving I might add. Running 5w-40 synthetic and new Alusil and tranny...definitely one of my best buys in 04, Thanks Mark!

i still have the chip sitting in the envelope that Mark sent it in about a year ago.

i know you have to use premium with the chip,. is the upgrade and the possible increased mileage worth it?
i'm in california by the way so gas isn't cheap.. most of the driving will probably be freeways, or at least half of it anyways.

...if you don't use the additional new-found power, you'll be breaking even. Then again....vrrrrrrm! :D
