...perhaps with a demonstration! Like that "em-bee-dubble" thing. My son, when asked where his car is, points to the 318iS. When asked where Mommy's car is, he points to the 525. When asked about Daddy's, he points to the Explorer. At least he has his priorities straight...

As for the Model A, he just calls it "oogah" after the sound the horn makes.

i REALLY need one in good shape. Mine is starting to howl pretty bad. I have a '93 525i with a 3.23 LSD now, I could possibly do something a little higher, but i do quite a bit of highway driving, so im not sure if i want to stray away from the stock setup. do you have the 3.23 LSD still available? If so, what kind of condition

on the subject of diffs, ne1 driven a 535 Auto with a 3.91(early 1990) compared to a 4.27(late 1990 on) and can share some real life opinions on the difference. Looks good on paper and honestly mine is quite a dog from stand-still (3.91) and the 4.27 for sale looks like a great deal. I assume it is a direct swap, though it is from a 7 series.

the 5 series 6 cyl and 530 are interchangeable whereas the 540 and 7 serieis use the bigger differentials.

Billy,
I too have the 1990 535iA with the 3.91lsd and did notice a difference when I test drove a 1991 535iA probably with a 4.27. This was when I was shopping for an E34 and before I knew much about the diffs. That '91 did seem to roar out of the on-ramps a bit quicker, but that car had too much neglect so I got the '90. The 4.27 for sale is supposedly an open vs. limited slip, so that would be another thing to consider before purchasing. In my case, adding the EAT chip made a nice difference with acceleration for now. I would also be interested in other's experiences on just this differential topic with our 535's.

Starting late in the 1990 model run they changed to the 4.27 on the automatics, mine is a 10-89 build date and has the 3.91, is that diff a direct swap? Anybody know for sure?
Thanks

and yes it did make a big difference, especially in the upper revs, but from a standstill my car is quite sluggish, open or LSD does not matter to me for this car. (hey, it IS an automatic)

Billy + Jeff, AFAIK, the 735i diff is the same as the 6 cyl + 530i diff, EXCEPT you have to swap out the input flange from your E34 onto the 735i diff. Once you do that, it is supposed to be a direct bolt-in replacement.

I can't comment from personal experience on switching from a 3.91 to a 4.27, but I am always pretty impressed when I really stomp on the gas in the wife's 535ia (factory equipped with a 4.27)- it really moves that lard-ass car down the road!!

As of right now, the 3.23 LSD is still available. It's in good condition- I think the mileage is ~120k (will confirm + let you know if that's WAY off.....).

Sorry Bill, not gonna make it. We're gonna try to make the Jan meeting though. We still need to have an NC get together- I'm still open to having it out here at the farm, but we should probably wait until it gets a bit warmer!!

i just swapped my peg leg 3.91 for a 4.27 posi and so far i like it but i only have about 4 days driving with it, it was fun oversteering out of the parking lot at work with wet tires the first time i gassed it, it was a direct bolt on from a 91 735 to my 90 535

Anyone know what the stock LSD ratio is for a 535i 5 speed?

Rigmaster

E34 535i 5 speed *should* have a 3.46 ratio, not necessarily an LSD though.

Ya, I have LSD on the e30 and it can be an adventure, that is why open or LSD not an issue on the e34A with me. Don't really wanna swing that big butt around by mistake.

i love to swing the e30 around and the e34 swings with relitive ease, but i've been oversteering for years, my 2nd car was a 83 rx7 one of the most fun and easy cars to steer with the assend, i could hang the rear out about a foot and a half and keep it there for almost a block, the e30 is not as well ballenced and with the irs the ass wants to come back inline in a hurry when it finds traction (i did get a cheer from the crowd when i drifted the first turn at the last auto x i did, back before drifting was "cool") all of our cars now have posi's 3.73 in my 90 325ism 4.10 in moms 90 325isa and now 4.27 in the 90 535ia, i like having a posi for more then the normal reasons of traction i know when it's gonna come out so it's not a suprise

C'mon guys, Santa wants you to have a "new" diff under your tree!! Sale pending on the 3.15LSD......anyone else want a diff at a great price??

A good friend of mine is headed out west sometime in late Jan/ early Feb, and could probably deliver one of these between here (Raleigh, NC) and there. He's probably going to be travelling all the way on I-40, his ultimate destination is the Phoenix area.

Thanks!!

would a 3.15LSD work in my '93 525i 5-spd without changing any flanges?

BUMP... List (above) updated, only 1 LSDiff left- better act soon if you've been considering it...Once these are gone, the source is sort of dried up for a while- at least...
