I'm boring beige right now and dreaming of a repaint. Of course I don't wanna paint my m20 525i m5 blue or anything silly, but I'd like to paint it something sexier than tan. As you all know nobody dreams in beige.

So if I were to repaint, what color?

Calypsorot red. Regal, royal, elegant, brilliant in sunlight and shade, stands out in a crowd. What... you guys disagree? ;)

Over the long haul, wouldn't alpine white be best? It reflects ultraviolet and infared colors well, so has less thermal stress. Its pigment seems tougher than silver, red, or brown, which often fade. No clearcoat problems either, in pre-'93 cars. Shows less dirt and crud than dark colors.

Recently, I saw a ~25 year old alpine white Bimmer in a mall parking lot, and its original paint still looked better than any other car around. Maybe not as snazzy as red, but much more durable and maintenance-free, and probably won't offend potential buyers at resale time. Your thoughts?

besides showing dirt like a bitch most white chalks bad as a oem color and most of the aftermarket jobs i've seen do it even worse (except the $3000+ kenny allen job my old boss had on his diesel volvo wagon, don't ask, it looked good 10 years later but the clear was starting to bust)

I agree, I think white is the best color for the e34

diamond swartz or however you spell it.....Avus Blue and calypso rot are good.BMW showrooms are always failry subdued compared to the rest of town........white may be the most practical, but it aint the BEST

am I th only guy with a blue e34? 91 535i Lazureblue Metallic.... I've only see one other e34 in this color, and that was over in New Orleans.... Well, my votes are split for my color blue, Orient Blue Metallic, Diamonschwarz Metallic (metallic black charcoal... the color of my old euro 745i) and plain old black! I love the Sterling silver of my 750il, but has not held up very well. The car has sat inside for the majority of it's life and now the basecoat has developed 'checking' or hariline cracks. Looks like crap. i guess i'll repaint the 750 once I'm done w/ the 535...

Of course I agree...
But if I were importing a M5 from Europe I'd hunt down an Avus or Daytona. mmm Daytona.

especially since I have one that still looks showroom fresh. Well, the paint does, but there are some hairline scratches in a few places.

My wife's white E34 looks like a Chevy or Ford in comparison, at least to me.

IMHO the surest way to make an E34 un-sellable is to change the color.
I personnally have 2 Black E34's and like that color the best. I have looked at
at least 100 BMW E34s that have been offered for sale over the last 3 years
and all the few that had color changes were horrible.

andyman32

I agree with Phil's point, really, a lot of the colors look dead sexy, as long as you have good body panels and a glossy clearcoat. There's a black 540 that parks on my street pretty often, and a Calypsorot 525 that parks in the neighborhood a few times per week. They both look GREAT... it pleases me to know that my car looks like that when someone else drives by IT.

I never liked any shade of red until I saw this car in person... the way the paint refracts sunlight is just... awesome.

I really like the navy blue, black, white and calypsorot and bronzit on these cars. The metallic green ones are OK, but I don't like it nearly as much on E34/39 sedans as on wagons. What I don't like as much is the helrot. I never liked solid red on any car, and to my eye, it just doesn't flatter the E34's shape.

Cheers

OMG, two very hot never-offered in the US colors. Very cool. Seen Tobago Blue in person on a Euro 850CSi at bimmerfest last year. Very beautiful Your petrol mica is phenomenal looking. Cool color that would be on my list if i ever did a BMW individual car.

My taste leans toward the darker colors like Avus Blue, Black, & Calypso Red...but when I saw this 95 Alpine White Touring back in July...I couldnt pass her by...even though she looked like a pizza delivery vehicle! :D

Actually white exterior and black interior where both on the bottom of my list when it came to color choices...but both the interior and exterior where in great condition...so that superceded my color preferences. :) http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/1/web/433000-433999/433594_299_full.jpg

Even though I drive a white one and like it, I almost went for the green when looking for my E34. Recently I saw a blue one on the road that really made me do a double take, more like my Cirrusblau 325iC, not dark, but not that glacier blue either, something special about that color in the 5 and 7 series of this vintage. Ultimately, I would agree with the "do not change the color" crowd with our cars. They are all pretty good colors though, aren't they?

Yeah I'm leaning hard toward that tobago color if I ever could possibly finance the project. Of course if I paint I might as well get new trim, wheels, lowering kit, and tinting..I'd spend more than the cars worth. Heh decisions, decisions.

If anyone, including Misfortune, is interested, there are hundreds of pics of the Aussie M-Sports at my Yahoo Group site. For reference, the Tobago Blue car in the pics I posted above are of car number 24. There are pics of one other Tobago Blue car on the site as well (#47 of 70). I think 3 of the 70 Limited Edition cars came in this colour.

Car #26 of 70 came in Calypsorot (which seems to appeal to you guys in the States) and there are some great pics of that car on the site as well.

My car, in Petrol Mica, is number 19 of 70.

Details of the site are:

this is only because the trim matches the paint colour. all new cars are solid colour; i had my 535 painted one solid colour including trim, door handles, etc and it looks like the e38 7 series now.

cost of a factory quality repaint might exceed $7000. Cheaper jobs will look just that- cheaper.

If you do repaint, you must repaint in the original color, or your door jams, and under the hood will no longer match the exterior.

If you don't like the color, simply sell the car and replace it with the color you like. And next time, don't buy a car that you don't like the color.

maybe the colour was not to your liking, that does not mean other people wouldn't like it.

the black e34 does look the best as mentioned in my previous post only because the trim is also the body colour. i had my car re-painted with emerald green and it is far more beautiful than black. all the trim, door handles, etc was done the same as the body colour and it looks more like an e38 in the profile than it does e34
