A vs. M on '94 530i

I am a first time BMW owner, so please forgive my question, but exactly how is the M setting for the transmission used on my 1994 530i as opposed to the A setting?

a is automatic, m is manual (to a point) and is supposed to help in winter. Leave it in the A position for everyday driving.

actually, i believe 'A' is for 'Adaptive', if i remember the manual correctly
