View Full Version : e12 1977 530i flywheel & e28 535 clutch kit, right?

Just want to make sure about the parts before I order. I know Winfred said the 528i e12 flywheel works. I assume the 1977 530i flywheel & e28 535 clutch kit will work also. Any reason to not think so?

What other parts should I replace?

that should do, get a pilot bearing if the kit don't come with one they are not all ways included

Also replace the plastic pivot ball behind the throw-out fork. They're only about 50 cents. They tap out from the outside of the bellhousing with a drift punch.

I ran an e28 535i flywheel and clutch kit. I checked onlince catalogs. The 530i kit doesn't work on a 3.5 e28 car. I would think you would have an easier time finding e28 parts as opposed to e12 parts.

How much different is the e28 flywheel over the e34, in feel?

I found the 1977 530i e12 flywheel for $25 plus $8 shipping. I'm going with the e28 535 clutch parts/kit.

I found the e28 setup to be quieter, firmer clutch engagement and slightly quicker revving. I had a bad front seal in my trans so the bellhousing was filled with MTL. My dual mass unit was basically shot. They are like $1100 new - so the e28 setup was far less expensive and a factory e34 setup.

Not to hijack your thread - but I missed the lead in: Sounds like there is a parts swap out for the 535i dual-mass ??
Would someone please recap on the preferred parts list for a '90 535i 5-sp: My clutch is fine - but has the trade mark 'death rattle' when the engine is shut down (which I always attributed to the dual - mass gear?) - It would never be replaced in-kind if there were an option. Thanks.

These parts are all for a e28 (1985-1988) 535i
Flywheel - must not be resurfaced !
Complete clutch kit (pressure plate, disc & throwoutbearing)
Flywheel Bolts
Rear Main Seal

Its an easy swap out, nothing else needs to be changed out.

Derek, is the rear main seal change required or just a good idea? I saw in my ETK that the flywheel bolts are shorter. So I need those. I guess the older flywheels aren't as thick. What do you mean when you say the flywheel must not be resurfaced?
