Hi all,

I owned a 88' E34 535i Manual. I am having some problem with the transmission (Getrag 260/6). While having it overhauled, I plan to install a temporary transmission. What is the transmission that can fit M30 3.5 E34 engine ?

I hv looked around and found out that M30 3.5 E28 runs on Getrag 260/5. Will this trans fit into E34 ?

Any ideas/input/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I believe all the e28/e24 260, 260/5, & perhaps the 265 will work. On one of them (I forget which one), the input shaft is shorter & won't work. There should be references to that on the web. You might find answers on some of the links at the bottom of this page:

My question is why do you want to swap trannies twice? How long is the rebuild going to take? Wouldn't a rental car be cheaper than buying a 2nd trans?

Jeffro sourced an e28 5 speed that turned out to have a different length & output flange. The shorter overall length was enough to dictate a different driveshaft assembly.

Hi Gale,

Thanks for the tip.

To answer ur questions, I managed to secure a Getrag 260/5 (free !!). It came from an E28 528i. I am not so worried abt labour, because me and my buddies will be doing the swap.

My only worries is the long shaft.

Martin's right. The m30 E28 unit is NOT a bolt in. The output shaft is about 5mm longer than the E34 unit. Same in all other regards. The stock e34 driveline won't bolt up to the E28 tranny in an E34.

From my research, the only one that straight fit is either from 635i or 735i...
I am exploring the possibilities of using the trans from 260/5 ..albeit with modifications of course.
