;) I'm thinking about upgrading my front grille and nose bracket. I have a 1993 525i and I want to upgrade it to a 1995 525 front. Has anybody done this before. I know that the grille is bigger on the 95 but will the nose fit the 93?

You'll need the newer hood as well--otherwise the lines of your hood won't line up with the kidneys.

I'm not really sure why everyone seems so keen to fit the later wide grille to their E34. I think the early grille looks better myself. More like how an E34 was supposed to be. The later grille has a kind of 'tacked on' look, like it was meant for a completely different model... that wasn't quite ready for release yet! I think this was a case of the designers attempting to extend the life of a model that was almost seven years old. To me the later E34 grille was the beginning of the characteristic design shift of the later BMW models... which in the main, I don't like. Still, each to his/her own! Remember the E30? The front design is basically a smaller version of a pre '94 E34. The new 5 Series didn't come out until '96, but the E30 was replace by the E36 in '92. If the E30 wasn't replaced by the E36 until '96 I'm sure the designers would have most likely fitted the E30 with a smaller version of the E34 wide grille as well.

small grills make the car slower, so as a serious performance mod I would recommend the wide grill even before a chip.

if bill r were here, he'd show you the bmw TIS article that says that the wide grille is responsible for 100% of the nikasil failures, even in the normally unafflicted I6 engines :D

Maybe, but I've heard wide grilles make you impotent! :D

You need to replace the hood, grille panel (complete) and the black plastic headlight surounds - all parts are simple plug and play with no modifications required, although painting is recommended. See before and afters of my '89 525i - I also did side mirrors, side skirts and paint below bumpers. I think it made my '89 look a whole lot better. Also I agree with Regal that wide grilles make the car go so much faster! :)

'89 525i (wide grille now)
'93 540i (always wide grille)
'83 323i (narrow grille - what can I say?)

OK...it's agreed that the wide grills improve performance immensely even more than a chip. However! It is also proven by major health scientists that it improves sexual function as well as size and stamina. As for the Nikasil failure those were all ultimatly the result of small grills and lack of proper air flow. The straight 6 nikisil falure fails to show any benefit from either the wide or pinass grills.

All the wide gorilla weenies come out of the closet to beat their chests. It's bad enough you guys have wide grilles, but oh, the shame of it when you advertise the fact and try to lead some poor innocent soul down the path of perversion! Have you no shame? Where is your moral decency?

You know narrow grilles are the way God made E34's. Live with it!!!

Hehehehe... I wish Quentin was here. :)

So you have all forgotten about the track day I had with Quentin who was driving a 535iM with a worked head and a Jim C chip, not to mention a HIOP suspension kit..... All against my stock 525iA.......

And guess who came first.....

Have you all forgotten who passed who on the main stright at Wakefield!!!!

So the story of wide grille speed and supremacy is an urban myth perpertuated by wide gorillas!

Hah! I love this argument :)

Oh, and here's the urls of that whole sage!

Having one of each (92 535iA, 94 530iT), I frankly have no favorite. I do however hate the old style mirrors. If I were to make a change on my wife's car it would be to ditch the chipped and bubbled mirrors in favor of the sleek two-toned aero bubbled type.

On either version, the M-Tec bumpers and skirts look the best. That would be my mod on either car if it were not about the benji's

Yah, you really have the passion. I thought it will be a simple shift but I will stay with my small grille.

Being the proud owner of the 2nd most gorgeous 5 series in Australia (I have the trophy to prove it) I feel qualified in responding.

The car in question is a 12/91 535i and has the wider grille and hood from the later model e34's. It also has many other attractive features including an M5 front valance.

Fit the enhanced hood and grille package and be prepared for life altering experiences:

More performance, better fuel consumption, you wll sleep better at nights and guys on harleys will give you the 'thumbs up'. You will be able to park anywhere unmolested and the opposite sex (or same sex depending on inclination.....) will find you irrestistable. The radar neutral qualities of the wider grille are legendary and will enable you to cruise at unbelievable velocities safe in the knowledge that you are invisible.

You will get instant respect in the office carpark and get that promotion that you have always wanted. You may even get approached by the government, due to your obvious good taste, and be offered a job where you get to drink vodka martini's on company time and get a tuxedo allowance (this only happens in rare circumstances and if it does don't expect to have any time to hang out on message boards like this one)

Go for it....
Quentin

Ps Australia's most gorgeous 5 series was deemed to be a 1994 525i with a narrow grille which just goes to show that while E34's may be perfect judges certainly aren't
