View Full Version : how to get fan clutch off??? help

i am attempting to replace my water pump, but am running into the problem of how to get the fan clutch off, have no idea how to get it off, any ideas?

counter clockwise, you might have to make a "special" tool, let me see if I have one hosted somewhere for you to look at. Mine is simpler than Winfreds :)

The threads for that bolt are opposite turning to get off. I think it is a 34mm thin open ended wrench required, I got mine from a bicycle supply house, about 5 or 6 dollars. Put the wrench on the nut and wack with a hammer (righty loosey, this time) and it should come right off. Some have had trouble getting it off, though.

I didn't need Jeff's Orc weapon/tool when I did mine. Have you tried getting the open end wrench on it and banging slightly harder than "lightly"? Remember, it is threaded opposite. Otherwise, people have tried holding the belt up a bit to tighten it while "banging" on the wrench.

and I had to make something quick so I took a piece of steel and made it with a drill and grinder, took a couple minutes. Tried other things like screw drivers and even clamped vicegrips on the pully (that suceeded in busting it to pieces), not recommended.

Personally, I take off the belt. Put a strap wrench around the water pump pulley so that I can push on it. Next, take the 32mm spanner (thin, and not 34mm), put it on the nut, and pull. Having the push pull allows you to get some torque on it without hammering the spanner where experience helps and murphy's law quickly asserts itself. You only have to loosen it a little BTW, as once the threads move, you can just turn the fan to loosen it up the rest of the way. Be ready to grab/catch it, otherwise it will fall straight down and perhaps ding up one of the fan blades or the rad.

ps ramp is ok, be goddamned careful if you're on jackstands trying to get that nut off. oh yeah, spray the nut with wd40.

Put a piece of cardboard between the fan and radiator.

no, i tried to post one of my old e30 but i couldent figure it out, im really stressing about this water pump
i need my car and i needs this fixed, grrrrrr

A 32 mm thin stem adjusting spanner from a bicycle shop, or try adjustable pliers -- the pliers worked for me. On my old E34 I could get a large adjustable wrench in there, but not on my "new" E34, why, I have not the foggiest idea. Maybe my wrench got fat and happy sitting in the tool box, who knows?

A pair of channel locks works...just snug it up when you re-install the Engine turning over will do the rest.

I read about someone doing that a long time ago...lets prevent misread directions.
