engine number

having trouble locating the engine number on my 89 525 E34, the mechanic thought it was near the dip stick but all we can see there is a faint "0"

any suggestions? I need to find it to register the car.

Possibly might help, but my 89 535i has the engine number on the back end of the block just above where the clutch bellhousing bolts onto the block. It is not easy to read.

I had a trouble finding the number when I was trying to register it too, so I took it to the closest dealer and they were able to locate it after a few minutes of searching.

had a look, can't see any number there, but did find one on the firewall with the bmw logo, the number is: 8281776.9E32AGFK
Do you think this resembles an engine number?

got it now, its below the intake pipes about half way along the block, raised numbers preceded by BMW. I can only see the first 5 digits so will have to crawl under to find the rest.
